The Conservatives by saying it is not legitimate reinforces peoples idea that they are condescending bunch.
If there approach was more balanced, with the reality that they need to deal, maybe the Lib Dem's would be more amenable. When they have shown nothing but distaste for the Lib Dem's in the past, is it any wonder a marriage is not likely.
Even Brown has shown some humility, knowing that Labour must try and make a deal not only with one party but with some of the smaller parties as well.
Can you imagine the Conservatives even acknowledging that the smaller parties exist.
As for changing the electoral system, it would be a very bitter pill for both large parties because it balances the peoples votes and makes each vote equal in value.
A Tory/Lib Dem government will not deliver it, however a Labour/Lib Dem combination might, because at least labour has had some support within the party for a change for some time.
