Liberal parliamentary secretary Don Randall MP has rubbished opposition treasury spokesman Joe Hockey.
Describing as a "lunatic fringe-type idea" the suggestion of Parliament regulating how banks increase their interest rates.
Mr Hockey is demanding Treasurer Wayne Swan use all the levers of his position to prevent the banks from raising interest rates over and above Reserve Bank adjustments.
He suggested the Coalition might be able to garner sufficient crossbench support in Parliament to take action against the banks if Mr Swan did not act. People on both sides of the house were stunned.
While in government it was Joe Hockey who stated that under no circumstances should governments interfere with the independents of the reserve.

Don Randall, though, lampooned the idea as one typical of the Australian Greens."This is just another one of their ... lunatic fringe-type ideas," he told reporters in Canberra not realising that it was Joe's idea..
Mr Hockey's own party was not prepared to support his "latest piece of ill-considered rubbish".
"This is an absurd suggestion of intervention from Mr Hockey.
The political ruckus over interest rates comes two weeks after the Reserve Bank held off on lifting its key cash rate, surprising markets and pleasing borrowers.
Is this the beginning of the end for Joe, after all he was missing in action during the election.
