JULIA Gillard says pensioners will be given high-quality, easy-to-use set-top boxes under a $308 million budget.
The Prime Minster said the cost included installation, a lesson on how to use the technology and a 12-month support package.
But Ms Gillard said the 38,000 set-top boxes already installed were specially designed for use by pensioners, many of whom considered television to be their “only companion in life”.
“When we talk about the set-top box, we are not talking about the cheapest one you can go and get from an electrical store.”
Master Electricians Australia today warned the scheme could result in the deaths of installers.
The peak body's chief executive Malcolm Richards said an online training scheme for antenna installers for tradesman was inadequate.
“The result will be injuries and possibly deaths of untrained workers".
Qualified Electricians installing set top boxes would be a ridiculous overkill and the opposition knows it, however they don't care, provided the gain points against the government.
The Coalition has still got the government on the run over the Batts issue, so now we have a situation where we are going to pay fully qualified Electricians to install set top boxes that at present are being installed by shop assistants.
